My trip to Ireland

bulletUnlike many surnames we can trace our name to its inception can be traced back to Wizo the Fleming a Norman Baron.
bulletMost  of us have Irish ancestors I have and so have my fellow researchers so you presume that  Wogan is an Irish name  but Wogan is of Welsh origin [Wales is part of the UK] for those outside of the UK .
bulletThe origin of the name goes back to around the late 1000-to the early 1100s when a marriage took place in  in Wales either in Rudaxton or Wiston  .
bullet The marriage of Gwenllian, heiress of the line of Wizo, with Gwgan ap Bleddyn, lord of Llangors, in the county of Brecon, whose son Walter assumed the surname of Wogan, together with the arms, 'or on a chief sable three martlets of the field,' and became the founder of a family of great importance in the history of Pembrokeshire follow the link you will have to scroll down a bit but the evidence is  there. Wizo the Fleming built  Wiston Castle and also the Church across the road. Wiston gets its name from Wizo the Fleming known as Wizo's Town then shortened to Wiston. So from the onset of the name we have been in High society and stayed there until we lost favour with the protestant English Royalty.
bullet Wogan is anglicizing of the Welsh name Gwgan meaning to scowl.
bullet Sir John Wogan built Picton Castle in Wales as part of a dowry for his bride Joan Picton
bulletUnder Pembroke Castle there is a natural cavern named Wogan Cavern
bulletHow did the name go to Ireland .
bullet

We went to aid Dermott Mc Murrough Irish King of Leinster he was having a bit of a set to with his neighbour  Rory O'Connor who was made High King of  Ireland .He asked Henry 11 of England for help Henry told him to ask the Earl of Pembroke (Strongbow) to help him who sent an army to Ireland to fight on his behalf.   Wogan knight was included in this army.

bullet

In 1295 Sir John Wogan was sent out to Ireland by the King of England to sort out all the feuding that was going on there.

bullet

He was made Justicar of all Ireland .Later he was granted the lands and Manor of Rathcoffey in 1317 and later the castle manor and territory of Kildare .

bulletIn the same year that Sir  John was made Justicar 1295 he was also asked to send an army of Irish troops to Scotland
bullet Rathcoffey Castle in Ireland was the baronial home of the Wogan family [link shows all that is left of the castle]
bullet Clongeswood in Ireland   was the home of the Wogan-Browne and is still standing to this day
bulletWogan to the USA  would have most probably come from  Ireland or the UK  .
bullet With the onset of better means of travelling it went to Canada ,Australia [there  is two recorded cases of Wogan being deported from Ireland ]and New Zealand .
bulletThe name went to Germany  around the 14th century and France, where the name to the best of my knowledge has died  out.
bulletThe main countries that have got  Wogan living in them are Wales, England ,Ireland ,USA, Canada, Australia,  New Zealand ,Germany obviously   the name is elsewhere but these are the main countries.
